Historical observations
William Herschel (c.1784)
Synonyms: H I-154
Discovered in 1786 by William Herschel with an 18.7-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He called it "cB, pL, E np-sf, vgmbM, 3' long, 2' broad."
Birr Castle/Lord Rosse
Observations with the 72-inch f/8.8 speculum telescope at Birr Castle noted "Oct 16, 1855. Oval, no nucleus, light pretty equable, major axis np, sf; clearly resolvable. I can at moments see some of its stars. A bright star at southern edge."

The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 13.0 mag galaxy. Their coded description reads EL,HISBCT,DIFHALO.
