Synonyms: H I-277
Discovered in 1797 by William Herschel with an 18.7-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He called it "vB, cL, lE, mbM."

The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 13.0 mag galaxy. Their coded description reads E,SLEL,BM.

25cm - pretty br lentic obj 1'.5x0'.75 in pa150. vsm nrly *ar nuc in br 0'.3
core. get impression of axial spike along maj axis, partic N side. *s
NE & NW are m11, 11.5. BS, 13Feb1981, Anderson Mesa.
30cm - of sim mag as N4291. elong in pa120, 1'.2x0'.75. well concen w/a br *ar
nuc in elong core. gx forms equilat triangle w/m12.5 *s 2' N & NW.
