Discovered in 1784 by William Herschel with an 18.7-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He called it "faint, pretty large, the largest of two." The other object alluded to is III-97.
The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 14.0 mag galaxy. Their coded description reads SLEL,BM,DKLN BISECTS.

[12h 24m 54s, 7° 27m 0s] A faint, small smudge. A 45° spiral? No. An edge on with a huge dust lane, like NGC 5128.
