Discovered in 1785 by William Herschel with an 18.7-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He called it "pB, cL, irregular figue, bM."

Sulentic & Tifft (1973)
The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 13.0 mag galaxy. Their coded description reads S,SLEL,BM,PERIPHLNS.

NGC: * 0'.2 from nuc.
POSS: pa174. m10 * 2'.6 SE, m12.5 * 2'.2 ENE, wide (37") pair m12.5-13
6'.7 S, elong in pa30.
15cm - barely vis NE of m10 *.
25cm - 1'.25x0'.75 in pa150. sl brtr core and *ar nuc.
30cm - nice. 220x: 2'x1' in pa165 w/a rounder bulging core. fairly well concen.
averted vis shows a br *ar nuc, which is on Nrn side of center. m11.5 *
lies 2' WSW, m12.5 * 2' ENE. m12.5 pair 45" sep is 7' S. core not much
brtr than halo.
