William Herschel (c.1784)
Synonyms: H I-196
Discovered in 1788 by William Herschel with an 18.7-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He called it "cB, cL, iF, vgbM, S.f. a star."
Published comments
Burnham's Celestial Handbook
Burnham calls it a 12.3 mag elliptcial galaxy in Canes Venatici, measuring 1.4' x 0.8', which is bright, pretty large, slightly elongated, gradually brighter in the middle.
Sulentic & Tifft (1973)
The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 12.5 mag galaxy. Their coded description reads E,SLEL,BM,DKLNPERIPH.
Modern observations

POSS: looks like m~!3 * sup 15"-20" NNE of center.
UGC: pa150.
15cm - mod f gx on S end of triangle of mod br *s. 1' diam, elong in pa135 suspected. *ar nuc, round core.
25cm - pa135, 1'.25x0'.5. core round, poss oval in pa90? *ar nuc inconsp. * or spot suspected S or SE of core. 180x.
30cm - again fairly br. broad oval core is well concen w/f *ar nuc. halo is of thin spikes in pa145. core 1'.75x1'; halo 2'.25x1'.25. gx lies off Srn vertex of a triangle.
