NGC 3396. See IC 2613.
Synonyms: H I-117
Discovered in 1785 by William Herschel with an 18.7-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He called it "Two; the first [NGC 3395], cB, cL, irregularly extended; the second [NGC 3396], pB, pL, irregularly extended. Distance 1' at the vertex at the north ends."
Together with NGC 3395 listed as No. 270 in Arp's "Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies" (Astrophysical Journal Supplement, vol. 14, 1966.) He remarks "note arc form of emission knots."
G. de Vaucouleurs ("Galaxies and the Universe", Chapter 14 - Nearby Groups of Galaxies) notes that the NGC 3396 Group is a part of the Leo II Cloud Complex. The five brightest members of the NGC 3396 Group are NGC 3430, NGC 3395, NGC 3396, NGC 3427 & NGC 3413.
The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 12.5 mag galaxy. Their coded description reads EL,HISBCT,DIFPERIPH.
Van den Bergh (1961, Astronomical Journal, Vol 66, p566) notes that this galaxy forms a pure pair with NGC 3395 1.3 arcminutes away.
