The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 12.5 mag galaxy. Their coded description reads EL,DIF,MBM,DST).

Modern observations

Steve Coe

Steve Coe, using a 13" f/5.6, notes: "Pretty faint, pretty large, very much elongated 3 X 1 in PA 10, gradually brighter middle, there is a 13th mag star on the northern tip at 100X."

12-inch f/10 SCT (218x)

What a beautiful elongated spindle in an N to S direction. The southern edge looks wider and more define, where as the northern part running out fainter and thinner. No real nucleus could be seen. The brightest star in the field is an 8.1 magnitude star on the SW of the field of view, with a busy eastern field. Looks like a comet. Just smaller than NGC 2090.

Location:Blesfontein Guest Farm,Sutherland.

Time:2:10am.

Sky Conditions:The most crystal clear sky possible.Dark moon and stars magnitude 6 and fainter are visible with the naked eye.Excellent clean sky, limited star flickering and brilliant objects.

Instrument:12-inch Dobsonian.

This galaxy has a very large fairly long extension which is elongated in structure as a diffuse smudge of faint light at both 57x and 75x.This galaxy has a somewhat elongated structure whereby the nucleus of this galaxy is centrally condensed.Around the outskirts of this galaxy there are some areas of uneven brightness. This galaxy measures 9.2'x 5.1'with P.A:North/South.Chart No.174,NSOG Vol.1.
