The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 11.5 mag galaxy. Their coded description reads S,HISB CT,PD,VDIF DKLN ACROSS CT.

Lorenzin, in the electronic version of "1000+ The Amateur Astronomers' Field Guide to Deep Sky Observing", notes: "11.6M; 5'x 2.5' extent; fairly large oblong with little, if any, center brightening; axis oriented NNW-SSE; SP GAL N2146a (12.5M; 2'x 1' extent), very soft oblong 15' to ENE just N of 8M star (SAO 5818); good supernova prospect."
RSA: br part in pa135, halo pa~120.
15cm - 90x: f, sm, rising little to center. 1'.5x1'.
- lg fairly br gx @ 80x w/grp of br *s on E. 140x: elong SE-NW, 5'x1'.5,
mod even concen to oval core and occas-vis *ar nuc. halo extends SE past
string of three *s on E. threshold *(?) in halo due S of center. BS,
27Nov1992, Anderson Mesa.
25cm - seen @ 47x. 180x: fairly br but diffuse w/o much concen. vf sm core pops
out occas w/averted vis. 3'x1'.5 in pa120, oval.
30cm - lg, br, elong @ 140x. 5'x2'. pretty well concen. 220x: broad, lg core not
as elong as halo, mottled, partic nr nuc. f *ar nuc. 5'x1'.8 in pa120. br
grp of six *s E of gx, incl a close pair nrby.
