The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 13.5 mag galaxy. Their coded description reads R,BM,FDIF ATTFOSIDE.
Steve Coe, using a 13.1" f/5.6, notes: "NGC 1 Faint, small, round, somewhat brighter in the middle at 165X."
Tom Lorenzin, in the electronic version of "1000+ The Amateur Astronomers' Field Guide to Deep Sky Observing", notes the magnitude as 12.8 and comments "1.5'x 1' extent; very faint and difficult; remarkable only for its NGC number; about 1.5 degrees S and a little W of Alpha AND; 20' W of EL GAL N16."

Lick: triangle 4'.6 long, points E, lies 1'.9 N.
15cm - fairly f @ 140x. 20" diam w/oval core of approx uniform brtness, and f halo. N 2 vis 2' SSE, q.v. BS, 9Sep1989, Anderson Mesa.
30cm - found 2' S of Ern tip of triangle of m10.5 *s. fairly f, modlosfcbr, mod concen. 45" diam, perhaps elong in pa90.

[0h 7m 18s, 27° 43m 0s] Very small, and faint. Almost invisible in the 30mm, much easier in the 12.5.
