William Herschel (c.1784)
Synonyms: H II-596
Discovered in 1786 by William Herschel with an 18.7-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He called it "F, S, bM, 1' south of a small star."
Birr Castle/Lord Rosse
An observer using the 72-inch f/8.8 speculum telescope at Birr Castle noted "oval; star in north edge."

The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 13.0 mag galaxy. Their coded description reads SLEL,HISB,ARMORFIL N.

Steve Coe, using a 13.1" f/5.6, notes: ""NGC 706 Pretty bright, small, round and much brighter in the middle at 100X. This galaxy and NGCs 693 and 676 form a chain in the 30' field of view."
