Discovered by Sir John Herschel at the Cape of Good Hope with an 18-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He recorded it as "pF, R, svmbM to a star 12m, 20 arcseconds." The next record reads: "pF, R, gbM, 20 arcseconds."
"Survey of bright galaxies south of -35° declination", Mem. Mount Stromlo, No. 13. (photographic study, plates taken with the 30-inch Reynolds reflector, 20-inch diaphragm).
(Astrophysical Journal, 202, 563-582) notes that this galaxy is a member of the Telescopium Group. Members include NGC 6851, NGC 6861, NGC 6861D, NGC 6868, NGC 6870, NGC 6875, NGC 6878, NGC 6890, NGC 6893, NGC 6902, NGC 6909 & ESO 285- G 7.
G. de Vaucouleurs ("Galaxies and the Universe", Chapter 14 - Nearby Groups of Galaxies) notes that the five brightest members of the NGC 6861 Group are NGC 6868, NGC 6861, ESO 285- G 7, NGC 6902 & NGC 6893.

= Fairall 537 (ESO 234 G 06)
(Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 12.5 mag galaxy.
Shobbrook (1966, Mon. Not. R. astr. Soc., Vol 131, p351-363) notes that this member of the Telescopium Cluster has V = 12.14, B-V = 1.06 and U-B = 0.6. It measures 0.75 by 0.4.
