Discovered by Sir John Herschel at the Cape of Good Hope with an 18-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He recorded it as No. 3713 in his catalogue, and described it as "F, S, E, bM, between 2 stars 10th mag 45 degrees S.p. and N.f."
The NGC (1888) lists the number 3713 in John Herschel's catalogue for both NGC 6480 and NGC 6483. The description in the Cape Observations for No. 3713 corresponds with the description recorded for NGC 6483.
