NGC 5797 is UGC 09619. RNGC has got the wrong position for this as well as for NGC 5794, 5804, and 5805 -- in spite of good positions in NGC. See NGC 5805 for more.
Synonyms: H III-678
Discovered in 1787 by William Herschel with an 18.7-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He called it "Two [NGC 5797 & NGC 5804] The preceding vS, vS. The following eF, eS."
The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 13.5 mag galaxy. Their coded description reads R,BM,SLDIF,B*2'SOUTH.
Steve Coe, using a 13" f/5.6, notes: "Pretty bright, pretty large, elongated 1.5X1 in PA 90 and somewhat brighter in the middle at 135X. This is the brightest galaxy in the group."
