This galaxy is one of a group of galaxies near the handle of the Big Dipper. The group consists of NGC 5308, NGC 5322,NGC 5342, NGC 5370, NGC 5372, NGC 5376, NGC 5379, NGC 5389, NGC 5402 and NGC 5430.
Synonyms: H I-238, H II-844
Discovered in 1789 by William Herschel with an 18.7-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He called it "cB, pL, iR, vgmbM."
The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 13.0 mag galaxy. Their coded description reads SLEL,BM,HISB.
Ron Morales, using a 13-inch reflector, notes that this galaxy is about 1' in diameter and is slightly oval.
