Historical observations
William Herschel (c.1784)
Synonyms: H II-688
Discovered in 1787 by William Herschel with an 18.7-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He called it "F, mE 15 degrees sp-nf, lbM, 4' long, 0.75' broad."
Published comments
Burnham's Celestial Handbook
Burnham calls it a 13th mag spiral galaxy in Canes Venatici, measuring 3.4' x 0.5', which he describes as "considerably faint, large, very much elongated, seen nearly edge-on."
Sulentic & Tifft (1973)
The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 12.5 mag galaxy. Their coded description reads EL,DIF,LBM,DKLNS DSK.

Lick: no * SW, maybe one sup on bar of gx.
15cm - barely.
25cm - pa150, 1'.5x0'.5. *ry texture, spindle. losfcbr, best @ 90x.
30cm - fairly losfcbr. 1'.8x0'.8 in pa150. lentic shape w/cen bulge. perhaps *
1' SW. lo concen to f non*ar nuc.
