Historical observations

John Herschel

Discovered by John Herschel at the Cape of Good Hope with an 18-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He recorded it only as "The following of two." The other object is NGC 5048.

The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 15.0 mag galaxy. Their coded description reads S,LBM.
