Discovered in 1786 by William Herschel with an 18.7-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He called it "vF, S."

The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 15.0 mag galaxy. Their coded description reads E,SLEL,BM,*ORCOM S.

Steve Coe, observing with a 13" f/5.6, notes: "form a very difficult galaxy grouping [NGC 4773-77-80] in the 13" at 135X even on a night I rated 6/10 for seeing and 7/10 for transparency. 4473 and 4480 can be held steady with 4477 fading and brightening with the seeing. All three are round and not brighter in the middle. If you are looking for a challenge, this ought to do it."
