Historical observations

John Herschel (1847) Cape Observations

This 12.8 magnitude spiral in Antlia was discovered by Sir John Herschel at the Cape of Good Hope with an 18-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He recorded it as "pretty faint, small, round, very suddenly much brighter in the middle to a star of 12th magnitude." His next observation reads: "Not very faint, round, suddenly a little brighter in the middle, 15 arcsec across. The first of three." This galaxy lies in the half-degree grouping of NGC 3347, 3354 & 3358.

"Loose grouping of bright, large-size galaxies that stands out on plate, where such galaxies are few. Fainter galaxies not seen in the region. Brighter members include NGC 3347 (spiral, mag. 10); 3354 (mag 13); 3358 (spiral? mag 11), Anon 1 (mag13) and Anon 2 (very low surface brightness objects, possibly face-on spiral, mag 16-17). NGC 3358 has visible nuclear structure and large detached elliptical ring (4'x2')."

Sulentic & Tifft (1973)

Notes that this is a 12.0 mag galaxy. Their coded description reads S,EL,BM,ODIFARMS.

Notes: "In an interesting field sprinkled with many stars are three nebulae, of which NGC 3347 is the first . . the first and third are ellipticalm and the second is small, faint and nearly round. 15cm shows only the two ellipses, and rather dimly."
