Houston writes that "a little less than one degree north-west of M11, within a quadrilateral of 6th and 7th magnitude stars that includes R Scuti, is a tiny knot of stars only a couple of arc minutes in diameter known as Basel 1. Although it shows well on most photographs of this region, I do not know of a single star atlas that plots the group. It can be seen with a 4-inch and a 12-inch makes it into an obvious cluster."
Steve Coe, observing with a 17.5" f/4.5 at 100X, notes: "pretty faint, pretty small, not compressed. 12 stars and a hazy backround of dimmer members at 100X. A nice trapezium of stars surrounds the cluster. Near R Scuti.
