NGC 7281. JH's position is about 30 seconds of time preceding the center of the cluster, but it is large enough (15' by 9') that the difference does not affect the identification.
The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a open cluster.
Tom Lorenzin, in the e-version of "1000+ The Amateur Astronomers' Field Guide to Deep Sky Observing", notes: "8.5M; Small scattered group in the midst of the milky way with three 10M stars in a short line; 40' to WNW is cluster N7281."
25cm - ~45' E of -61. 15' diam w/35 *s. on W is straight E-W line of three m8.5 *s. S of these is greatest concen of m11+ *s. to W & N of three-in-line are scattered *s, apparently members.
30cm - vspread, not vdistinct. 30-40 *s in 10' diam. three brtr *s in pa70 on W side. most *s around and S of these. scattered *s E&N.
