Discovered by Sir John Herschel at the Cape of Good Hope with an 18-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He recorded it as "pB, pL, gbM, near two stars 10m."

Sandage (1975(Astrophysical Journal, 202, 563-582) notes that this galaxy is a member of the Telescopium Group. Members include NGC 6851, NGC 6861, NGC 6861D, NGC 6868, NGC 6870, NGC 6875, NGC 6878, NGC 6890, NGC 6893, NGC 6902, NGC 6909 & ESO 285- G 7.
The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 13.0 mag galaxy.
Shobbrook (1966, Mon. Not. R. astr. Soc., Vol 131, p351-363) notes that this member of the Telescopium Cluster has V = 12.46, B-V = 0.90 and U-B = 0.4. It measures 0.85 by 0.37.
