The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 7.0 mag cluster associated with nebulosity.
pF, pL, structureless, but with a well defined circular dark hole in it; 20 arcseconds in diameter, south preceding of the double star. It is the brightest part of an extended nebulosity described by Barnard (AN 4239) in which NGC 6589, IC 1283 and IC 1284, are other bright knots.
