Historical observations

Dunlop, James (1827)

James Dunlop discovered this object from Paramatta, New South Wales, and included it as No. 333 in his catalogue of 1827. Using a 9-inch f/12 telescope, he described it as "a group of small stars with faint nebula. There is rather a gathering of the nebulous matter, about 10 arcseconds diameter, near the north side."

John Herschel (1847) Cape Observations

Observed by Sir John Herschel at the Cape of Good Hope with an 18-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He recorded it as "cluster VII. Pretty rich, stars 11..13th mag, irregular, scattered,10' diameter, rather more comp M."

Described in Union Obs. Circulars, 45-76, p 50. "Nebulae, clusters, etc. on Sydney Plates" as "Aggregation of faint stars."

Trumpler, R.J. (1928)

Trumpler (Lick Obs Bul, Vol 14, No. 420) gives the diameter as 9' and the class as 2 2 m.

Sulentic & Tifft (1973)

The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 10.0 mag open cluster.

This is a horse shoe cluster. The U form open up to the east consist of very faint stars somewhat stringy. The field around this U form is very busy with various magnitude stars.
