Discovered by Sir John Herschel at the Cape of Good Hope with an 18-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He recorded it as "vF, S, R, 30 arcseconds."
Kron, G. E. (1956) Star Clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud: I. Identification of 69 Clusters. PASP, Vol. 68. [1956PASP...68..125K]
Describes it as a red cluster, noting the absence of nebulosity and the absence of bright blue stars.
Lindsay ("Clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud", Irish Astronomical Journal, Vol. 4, 1956) classifies it as a globular cluster on the basis of appearance only. He notes that Haffner, on the basis of appearance, called it an open cluster.
The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 12.0 mag globular cluster in the SMC.
15cm - mod f @ 140x, diffuse & unres. m14.5-15 * WNW side gives impression of elong. 20" diam. BS, 9Nov1993, LCO.
11x80: 1997-10-09, 02:30, Jonkershoek, seeing 3, transparency 3, darkness 3 "Not found."
