Historical observations

John Herschel (1847) Cape Observations

Discovered by Sir John Herschel at the Cape of Good Hope with an 18-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He recorded it as "a pretty rich, irregularly round cluster, not mbM, stars 12..13th mag, place that of the general middle." He notes that it is either Dunlop 489 or Dunlop 490. Dunlop 489 is described as "a very faint nebula, about 6' diameter, with small stars scattered in it -- in the mikly way." Dunlop 490 is described as "a very large cluster of pretty bright stars, coarsely scattered, about one degree diameter, following a star 5th magnitude, 396 Argus."

Trumpler, R.J. (1928)

Trumpler (Lick Obs Bul, Vol 14, No. 420) gives the diameter as 4' and the class as 2 2 p. He notes that Trumpler 10 is "a large coarse cluster of a few bright and medium bright stars, observed by Dunlop (490) and Bailey. Both observations have been erroneously identified with the cluster NGC 2671, a small cluster of faint stars near by; it is probably for this reason that the cluster was omitted from the NGC."

"Bertha" 12-inch f/4.8 Dobsonian (EP: 32mm, 25mm, 10mm, 6.3mm Plossls, 2x Barlow, 32mm Erfle)

Conditions: Clear, dark.

Mini Beehive. A delightful soft cloud of tiny star-points. At least 25 very very faint stars can be seen in a 4' area, pretty evenly concentrated, so that they make a distinct grouping. Moderately bright stars, totally unrelated, are scattered beyond its borders. The whole strongly recalls the Praesepe cool! (MSA 944)

1995

This dim open cluster contrasts nicely with the nearby Trumpler 10. A 10-inch f/5 at 30x shows this faint, dim sprinkling of stars in a bright rich starfield; it can be readily seen at 66x. It appears as a pretty large mottled patch of light with about 10 faint individual stars seen, and has a roughly triangular shape.

1994 March 09

1994-03-09 22:30 Die Boord. Observing with a 6-inch f/8.6 Newtonian at 52x. In a field well-populated with large and small stars, flowing north of the coarse Trumpler 10, lies this delicate cluster. It stands in stark contrast to Tr 10: the cluster is an extended area of strongly mottled light with several stars clearly seen - like a piece of frosted glass with glistening highlights. Wonderful in the 6-inch: must be splendid in 10-inch or up.

Small in size, and slightly more compress to the middel area. The grouping is very much fainter than the background star field, but is seen with ease. Towards the eastern edge a few brighter stars can be seen.

1998 February 27

Date: 27 February 1998.

Location: Campsite (23 16 South 29 26 East)

Sky conditions: 7 magnitude clear.

Meade 8" (Super flossel 26mm). Field of view 40. 6 arc minutes.

Faint, large grouping, irregular in shape with medium bright and faint stars. Little brighter towards the middle. Busy starfield.

1997 April 15

Date: 1997 April 5

Location: Campsite (23 16 South 29 26 East)

Sky conditions: 7 magnitude clear.

Instrument: Meade 8" (Super wide angle 18mm eyepiece, 36')

Considerable large open cluster, compresses with a sort of a brighter core to the middle. It can be described as roughly triangularly shaped. Scattered region with small and bright stars in a relatively busy starfield. I estimate this open cluster to be about 11 to 12 magnitude in brightness, and about 4' in size.

8-inch f/10 SCT (EP: 1.25-inch 26mm SP 77x 41' fov; 1.25-inch 18mm SW 111x 36' fov)

Considerably large, open cluster, compressed with an apparent brighter core towards the middle. Small and bright stars are scattered in this hazy nebula (111x). It can be described as roughly triangularly shape. Stars well strung together going out into a relatively busy star field. The denser combination towards the northeast gradually thins out towards the southwest giving it a comet-like appearance. To the east a few stars more prominent, with two stars of about 8th magnitude following this comet cluster on the southwest end. Discovered by Sir John Herschel at the Cape of Good Hope with an 18-inch f/13 speculum telescope. (Mag 11.6; size 4.0'; number of stars = 40. )

Location:Perdeberg.

Time:11:54pm.

Sky Conditions:The fainter parts of the Milky Way are barely visible.Haziness only visible on the horizon.Atmosphere stable with little interference.

Instrument:12-inch Dobsonian.

This open cluster is well detached as a compact cluster that consists of 13th magnitude stars which almost takes the shape of a mini triangle.In this open cluster most of the stars are nearly as bright as each other and that this clusters stars are strongly concentrated towards each other.However this open cluster looks like a misty haze of light at both 57x and 75x.This open cluster measures 11.2'x 8.6'.
