NGC 1566 group

Part of the Dorado cloud complex (NGC 1566, NGC 1433, NGC 1672 groups).

Brightest members: 1566 ( B(0) = 10.09), 1553 ( B(0) = 10.57), 1549 ( B(0) = 11.05), 1617 ( B(0) = 11.40), 1574 ( B(0) = 11.62).

Sandage, A. et al. (1975) Galaxies and the Universe

G. de Vaucouleurs ("Galaxies and the Universe", Chapter 14 - Nearby Groups of Galaxies) notes that the five brightest members of the NGC 1566 group, a part of the Dorado Cloud complex, are NGC 1566, NGC 1553, NGC 1549, NGC 1617 & NGC 1574.

De Vaucouleurs (1956) "Survey of bright galaxies south of -35° declination", Mem. Mount Stromlo, No. 13. (photographic study, plates taken with the 30-inch Reynolds reflector, 20-inch diaphragm).

It measures 2.8' across and shines at magnitude 10.9.

Sulentic & Tifft (1973)

The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 11.0 mag galaxy.

Shobbrook (1966)

Shobbrook (1966, Mon. Not. R. astr. Soc., Vol 131, p351-363) notes that this member of the Dorado Cluster has V = 10.31, B-V = 0.88 and U-B = 0.5. It measures by 1.8 x 1.8.

Hartung notes: "In this field are two bright nebulae [NGC 1549 and NGC 1553] about 13' apart . . one is round, about 1.5' across with very bright nucleus; the other is elliptical, about 2' x 0.8' in pa 150 deg, strongly concentrated and even brighter. 7.5cm shows these nebulae plainly."

In a 15.5-inch telescope at 220x the galaxy looks like a globular cluster, round and diffuse. The galaxies central condensation is slightly off-centre. It lies near some bright stars. The galaxy NGC 1553 lies in the same low-power field.

1997 November 3/4, Jonkershoek. 11x80 tripod-mounted, seeing 4, transparency 3, darkness 3, lim mag = 6.0 (naked eye, pole) "Fainter of two, the other being NGC 1553. Lies just outside a half-degree triangle. Round glow; seems to be one or more small stars involved close to the galaxy."

1997 November 25

1997 November 25, Jonkershoek. 11x80 tripod-mounted, seeing 4, transparency 3, darkness 3, lim mag = 6.0 (naked eye, pole), very strong SE wind (gale force along the coast) "Two [1549 & 1553] beautiful smudges of nebulous haloes, clearly seen as fuzzy patches while sweeping."

NGC 1549 Mag 9 size 3

Round, small, bright starlike galaxy. Faint stars in the field. Faint star to the south. Both NGC 1553, NGC 1549 NGC 1546 and IC 2058, visible in my field of view. Last two mention much fainter, together they forms a nice circle around NGC 1553.

12-inch f/10 SCT (EP: 2-inch 40mm SW 76x 53' fov; 2-inch 14mm UW 218x 23' fov; 2-inch 8.8mm UW 346x 15' fov)

Slightly round, small and fairly bright with a very bright slightly off-centre nucleus. NGC 1553 (galaxy), also listed as Bennett 24, is situated only 11' arc minutes to the south. More galaxies to the south make it an interesting area to study (218x). The field of view is scattered with numerous faint stars, making it rather exceptional.

This galaxy almost has the shape of an out of focus rugby ball at 57x and 75x.This galaxy an oval-like structure in appearance which is well defined.The galactic nucleus of this galaxy is fairly bright and centrally condensed.This galaxy measures 3.7'x 2.4'.Chart No.115,NSOG Vol.3.

Size in Arc Minutes:5'.


Major Axis:5'.


Minor Axis:1.2'.

This galaxy is 5'*1.2'.

Brightness:Magnitude 9.9.

Brightness Profile:The central nucleus of this galaxy grows brighter in the centre compared to the far outskirts of this galaxy.

Challenge Rating:Moderately Difficult.



These two elliptical galaxies has an irregular shape on account that these galaxies are joined to each other as a result of gravitational rift.In fact one can see that these two galaxies are interacting galaxies which is part of the Dorado Group of galaxies.Around the outskirts of these galaxies plenty of areas of even brightness are noticed.
