Discovered in 1785 by William Herschel with an 18.7-inch f/13 speculum telescope. He called it "vB, R, BNM, 1.5' diameter." In the Philosophical Transactions, 1791, Herschel wrote: "In the year 1785, the 6th of October, I found a very bright, round nebula, of about 1.5 minute in diameter. It has a large, bright nucleus in the middle, which is undoubtedly connected with the luminous parts about it."
John Herschel recorded it as "vB, L, R, first vg then vs, vmbM; 3'."
In the 5th edition of Webb's Celestial Objects for Common Telescopes it is described as "Same character as H. II 593 [NGC 1400], fainter preceding."

pB, R, 1.5'diam, B alm.stell.N.in structureless haze; not a globular nebula.
The RNGC (Sulentic and Tifft 1973) notes that this is a 12.0 mag galaxy. Their coded description reads E,R,BM.

Sandage and Tammann includes this galaxy in the Eridanus Group. Members include NGC 1187, NGC 1201, NGC 1232, NGC 1255, NGC 1297, NGC 1300, NGC 1302, NGC 1325, NGC 1325A, NGC 1331, NGC 1332, NGC 1353, NGC 1359, NGC 1371, NGC 1385, NGC 1395, NGC 1398, NGC 1407, NGC 1415, NGC 1426, NGC 1439 & IC 1953.

Brightest members: 1232 ( B(0) = 10.73), 1398 ( B(0) = 10.73), 1187 ( B(0) = 11.21), 1300 ( B(0) = 11.34), 1407 ( B(0) = 11.43).
G. de Vaucouleurs ("Galaxies and the Universe", Chapter 14 - Nearby Groups of Galaxies) notes that the Eridanus Cloud includes the NGC 1209 and NGC 1332 groups. The five brightest members of the Eridanus Group are NGC 1232, NGC 1398, NGC 1187, NGC 1300 & NGC 1407.
Listed by the Herschel Club, described as "circular, bright nucleus, star-like appearance with slight haze at rims. 6-inch, 48x."
Tom Lorenzin, in the electronic version of "1000+ The Amateur Astronomers' Field Guide to Deep Sky Observing", notes: "11.4M; <1' diameter; soft patch with bright nucleus; EL GAL N1400 (12.4M; 0.8' diameter) tiny, faint glow 11.6' to WSW."
Steve Coe, observing with a 13" f/5.6, notes: "Pretty bright, pretty large, very little elongated 1.2 X 1 in PA 45, much brighter middle with a stellar nucleus at 150X. NGC 1400 and 1407 are surrounded by 10 fainter galaxies within one degree."

core. comp gx btwn -00 & -07?
30cm - much brtr than -00, easy @ 149x. 238x: well concen. core 0'.6 across,
vsm nuc. halo 1'.0 diam.

Sky Conditions:The fainter parts of the Milky Way.Haziness only visible on the horizon.Atmosphere stable with little interference.
This galaxy has a roundish shape which almost looks like a chicken's egg at both 57x and 75x.The nucleus of this galaxy is strongly concentrated in the centre as a soft grey sworl of light which is well defined.There are some areas of even brightness seen around the far outskirts of this galaxy.No darker areas are noticed around this galaxy.This galaxy measures 4'x 2'.Challenge Rating:Moderately Difficult.Chart:No.184,NSOG Vol.1
