E.E. Barnard (1919)

Barnard writes of this object in his article "On the Dark Markings of the Sky", (Astrophysical Journal, January 1919) as being "really the key to the explanation of most of the dark regions of the sky." He writes that this "great partially dark nebula is irregularly round, with a wide extension to the west. The object is unevenly dark with a brighter condensation in its eastern part. Its diameter along the east and west extension is two degrees; north and south its diameter is 1.2 degrees." This bright condensation is separately catalogued as Barnard 10. "There are several small, round, black spots in the northern part of this dark nebula" comments Barnard.

Note (supplied by Bill Gray, Project Pluto): Large, irregular, with brighter condensation (B 10) in SE part
